By now, nearly everyone has heard about Identity Theft. There are stories about it in newspapers around the country every day.
Most people think that Identity Theft occurs when someone steals your credit card number or social security number
and begins spending your money. You may be surprised to hear that only 26% of
Identity Theft crimes involve money.
There are basically three forms of Identity Theft. The first is the theft of your Medical Identity. This occurs
when someone obtains your social security number and/or birth date and assumes your identity for the purpose of obtaining
benefits or getting tests done in your name. For instance, someone wants to get
an AIDS.HIV test and not have the results in their own name, for obvious reasons. Imagine
the havoc a positive HIV test could have on your entire life.
The second form of Identity Theft is the theft of your Character Identity. This occurs when someone becomes you and commits a crime in your name. For instance, a teacher lost her purse and subsequently was informed her contract would not be renewed
because she had four arrests for prostitution! Another woman had supposedly been
arrested fourteen times for drug crimes, only it was not her that committed the crimes.
There are many other forms of Character Identity Theft, but you can understand the long-term implications of having
outstanding warrants in your name.
The third form of Identity Theft is the one that most people think of, Financial. The person who steals your identity may set up new accounts in your name, use existing
accounts and run up your balance, borrow money on your home, and buy cars or even homes in other cities in your name. After they have exhausted your credit, they disappear.
You are left with a 37 page FTC report to begin the long and sometimes impossible task of clearing your name.
